What is social justice?
The world we live in should have supplementary social justice. Social justice for me means having equality and solidarity. People united as one helping one another given that we all share an important aspect that makes us each and every one unique, we are all human beings. We all live in the one and only planet with life; however, we don’t look for one another lending a hand to those who need it. Instead, we let things such as media brainwash us and isolate us from one another. For example when it comes to health care people are not being aware that there are many things, such as chemicals and more that are affecting peoples life. If they are aware they try to take advantage of those with lack of education. Also, and example from life is the lack of education on the woman’s reproductive system. In my nursing class we learn that many women are not aware of what a pap smear is. As nurses we learn that we should teach women about this topic and the whole procedure as a whole. The definition has change because not many people care if others are educated and if they are aware of health care situation surrounding them.
What obstacles do we face while struggling to achieve social justice?
We haven't achieved social justice yet because there are many inequalities now in days that we still face in our daily lives. Yet we as people don’t do anything to change this society we live in. There are many injustices that don’t receive fairness. Many people are being treated unfair for the simper fact of who they are. Many people stereotype you because the way you look or even the way you sound. People are not being treated the same and media has a big influence for the reason that it brainwashes people often, with the intention of making them believe certain things that are not necessary true. From my point of view I see Social justice breaking apart in the 21st century because now in days is actually hard to find equality and unity. People get treated heartlessly. We don’t think further anymore which leads to individual awareness. We don’t consider significant what happens beyond us or what is hurting the people around us to any further extent. For instance many people believe that, if they have health care insurance they are most likely to get attention and if they don’t have anything they can’t do anything about it. A current obstacle that we face is that medical care is not for everyone and that is only for those that can afford it. In nursing we also learn that some people don’t get the attention they need because the lack of insurance for care and this is one of the causes why people don’t get early detection or treatments.
What is your vision for struggle?
The strategies and techniques that help us achieve social justice when it come to health care is being open minded and getting everyone educated. Health care should be for everyone! Social justice will advance during my lifetime because I know that there is not much Latinos in the medical field. Statistics show that there are only 4% doctors and 7% nurses that are Latinos. I want to be in that field and would like more Latinos to increase those percents so that our people get the necessary attention they need.
What is your role in the struggle?
Mother earth should be receiving unity because we all share this earth that little by little we destroy. We should give it a value and respect it! All of us human were created the same, up till this day it doesn’t look like it. We all shared something that is exceptional and we take it for granted. Education about health care should be cultivated so that mortality rates decrease. My personal contribution to the struggle for social justice is education Latina women about the importance of health, especially women that don’t know about their reproductive system. The fire in me is the wellness in the Latina women. My fire project is based on the prevention of cervical cancer based on the lack of education on pap smears. By becoming and OB-GYN in the future I will educate Latina women to get pap smears and annual check up to get diagnose at an early and curable stage if sign and symptoms are present and as needed. Also, I hope to open my own clinic in the community of Little Village. I want to be committed to making any gynecology care possible for the women in my community that will reflect my commitment to social justice by preventing any illness and decreasing lack of education on this topic as well as mortality rates among the Latina women.
